Yesterday I was training Adobe InDesign at Cambridge University Press. Despite the snow, all but one delegate managed to make it in for the training. Cambridge University Press is a history of printing and it was a great honour to be able to train InDesign at that location. Needless to say I also took the opportunity to take some pics. |

Remember that danger of death poster? Well guess what? I'm back! I needed to finish the training for the gals here in Brentwood. I was training Excel 2016 and although the course outline was the same, the students today were a little more advanced than were last weeks. That being the case, we covered the creation of Tables and looked at Filters. We even had a chance to have a quick look at VLookup. All really useful functions! Had a really great fun day thanks Gals! Believe it or not that's the slogan for the company I was training Microsoft Word 2016 today in Reading. And it's not physical risk it's psychological risk. The delegates from Green Street were on a Word Training Course at the intermediate level. Therein lies the problem. That is where do you start? Now, it's true that I have the course outline that they have chosen. But sometimes the course outline is selected by a person not on the training course. However being adaptable they got what they wanted out of the course. However I will have to update our website with videos on:
Yesterday I went to deliver some Photoshop training at Carlsberg based in Northampton. Now Carlsberg already has an in-house design department, however the three students just wanted to do some basic editing within the application. This includes erasing the background from various pictures and hence making good use of the various tools such as the magic wand tool, the quick selection tool, lasso school, polygonal lasso tool and with a big dollop of the refine edge tool with all of them. I think one of the most difficult things for beginners to get to grips with in Adobe Photoshop, is the use of layers. However developing your layer skills is vital to be able to make any progress with in Adobe Photoshop. Also the good use of layers contributes to non-destructive editing which is another valuable asset in Adobe Photoshop. That's right punters! I was training Excel 2010 for the second time in two weeks, it's really becoming a habit! This time it was at one of our new offices in Birmingham. The delegates were from the MotoNovo motor finance company. It was a great introduction to the world of data analysis. This course is a fantastic beginning to the Power BI course that we offer. Today it was a Excel 2016 beginners training course at a company called Power On connections based in Brentwood just on the north east side of London. Now if you're wondering what they do then look now further than the electricity transformer at the end of the road. You know the one that says Danger of Death on the side. That's what they do. The students on the training course today only really used Excel to a limited degree and so it was important that I generate interest for them. Showing them what Excel can do. Part of the course included how to use percentages correctly using the Autosum function. We also included the Average, Max, Min and Count Numbers functions from the Autosum drop down menu which is the sigma character in the top right hand corner of the Home Tab. One of the most difficult things to cover in a beginners course in the understanding and usage of absolute references. However the comprehensive training book and video will make it much easier for them to absorb this much needed Excel tool at a later date. Thanks for the Lunch!! (Have to say that, as I'm back there next week). Today I was training Adobe Animate and it was for just one person. This time it was for a graphic designer newly employed at Pico Technology, maker of oscilloscopes. With a background in Adobe Illustrator the student wanted to learn to create animations and export them as a gif file. However we needed to keep the file size under 60kb. But just couldn't squeeze it. Then we found the culprit, it was the smoothing checkbox in the publishing settings box. One quick un-check and POW! File size was well below 60kb. There is so much to learn with Adobe Animate but with just the one student who was a quick a learner and with a keen imagination we not only covered a tremendous amount of the course, but also got some practice time in. Fandabidozi!
On a recent training course I was asked about the MID function. The function itself is easy enough, however I struggled when coming to use it in any useful way. So what did I do? Create a video!
So here it is... |
The art of trainingI've seen many things the good the bad and the darn right ugly. Not that perfection in training is anything I've achieved but sometimes a bit of empathy and common sense can make the person you're training feel at ease and aid training. Archives
