Back to Stewart Law, this time for the Intermediate Level InDesign Training Course in New Street Square just up from Fleet Street. The great thing about going back to a client that I've already done training for is that I can see their progress. I can also see where they are having difficulty. The difficulties were trying to work with a document that someone else has created. Trying to figure out what on earth the person was thinking using 6 columns and a crazy amount of guides scattered seemingly at random throughout the document. However the Data Merge feature was welcomed along with the new Cheatsheets, photo included, which we now provide with every InDesign/Excel course. Thanks a million ladies for a really enjoyable day!

Even though I'm a resident of Hammersmith, I've had yet to train in the Kensington offices which are basically the ones nearest my flat. That was until today. A Beginners Excel course in Kensington for 2 ladies who look after a multi-billionaire. We covered the major points such as using formula and formatting but covered a couple of extra points that I wouldn't ordinarily do.
Today I was at IMServe delivering an Introduction to InDesign in Milton Keynes. IMServe like a number of places I visit ask that you reverse park your car for safety. I don't know, do you think it helps reduce the number of accidents? Anyway on to the day.Now it can be tricky training InDesign when the delegates already have been trained on illustrator coupled with a familiarity of photoshop. Why you may ask? Well the delegates quickly grasped the introductory exercises. So, pretty much the basics in the morning and then carried on to some of the more advanced stuff in the afternoon. Subjects covered included data merge, master frames, along with liquid layout. have written something I want to write something on the web about this and also liquid layout. I also included a technique that uses master pages to create pages based on the amount of text you either copy and paste or place. Have you ever been in one of those really warm rooms, warm enough to melt the skin from your bones, well the room for our VBA training course in Peterborough today was just that. Also one of the delegates mentioned about finding the Venue was a bit difficult as the GPS on Google Maps took him to the street behind the building. The Stuart house venue in Peterborough has changed quite a bit since we last used it. Nice building lot's of renovations but not too sure if it's for the better. Also a plug point in the middle of the wall which was most peculiar if you wanted to use the wall to project upon.
One of the hardest things to teach about VBA on any programming language is to stop the students panicking about remembering syntax, you know every bracket, full stop and quotation mark. basically you need to teach them the fundamentals of any programming language including Loops control statements including select and if statements. |
The art of trainingI've seen many things the good the bad and the darn right ugly. Not that perfection in training is anything I've achieved but sometimes a bit of empathy and common sense can make the person you're training feel at ease and aid training. Archives
