I was training in Reading today! You it's funny that on WAZE (GPS) Reading is pronounced "reading" as in if you were reading a book. I can't tell you how much that plays havoc with my search engine optimisation. However about the training. Training Adobe PhotoShop was on the agenda today, and for Thames Cash & Carry wholesalers we we looking at creating web site banners. As this is a one day beginners course, there just isn't enough time to cover everything. That being the case we primarily focused on the use of layers, along with how to remove the white background that seems all too common on images. (Particularly if they're JPEG). Great day was had and I was reminded of how stupid I was for not going to the wholesaler to buy anything. It's sooooo cheap.

Another full day of chicken analysis! Yes that's right, I'm training Power BI at Faccenda in Brackley. Power BI is such a powerful tool and being able to directly connect to SQL, Excel and pretty much any other data source on the planet is not to be taken lightly. Also with the fast flowing updates that are flooding into Power BI, very soon Power BI will become a force to be reckoned with. Oh and don't forget all the visualisations, especially the info-graphics. Hey! I am back at Stewart Law in New Square near Blackfriars. Having trained InDesign before at this London based law firm I was please to be asked back to train a couple who have joined the team since then. They have had an inter-marketing design agency design some of their literature, however knowledge of InDesign saves them a considerable amount of time and money. Today I was back training in Reading. I was training a guy at Sequential Software Solutions on Power Query for Excel. This time we were looking at data that was provided for him by a large client. One of the things that's important to understand when training the power pivot data model is understanding the process of getting the data from power query into power pivot, and then presenting the data in Excel as a pivot table. We took the day nice and steady so that the process was fully understood. By the end of the course he was able to build his own data models and use slicers. The day was a success and looking forward to more work for him and the clients that he supports. Today I was training HTML at GYS in Rugby. The difference being is that the HTML being created by Dreamweaver was for email. So for this computer training course in Rugby what was the take home?
Today I was training in Reading one of the partners of this Sequential Software Solutions. The course was PowerPivot. This was an initial training course to help them understand the role of PowerPivot and how it would help his clients migrate from an Excel based system into something more like Business Intelligence. I think that one of the more unusual concepts to get your head around is the concept of using measures instead of calculated columns. Basically the calculated column method of returning a result is akin to using Excel and adding a column and calculating on a row by row basis. Needless to say that this method is taxing for the application and everything will run as slow as if it were wading through treacle. Topics covered:

The art of trainingI've seen many things the good the bad and the darn right ugly. Not that perfection in training is anything I've achieved but sometimes a bit of empathy and common sense can make the person you're training feel at ease and aid training. Archives
