Today I was in Waterbeach, which is a small town or village near Cambridge, training 9 people on Excel 365 and we were really looking at how to organise data. One of the mistakes that most people make when using Excel is trying to make arranging the data so that it is practical for PivotTables while at the same time trying to make the data look pretty. The answer? It can't be done. Think of your data sort of like a warehouse, would you sell your products directly from your warehouse? Of course you wouldn't. Rather, you would have a nice shop where you can arrange your products aesthetically while at the same time making it as easy as possible for your customers to buy your products. I mean, how easy would it be for your customers to go to a warehouse and buy products? So in the same way, you would want to keep your data according to specific criteria, and use that data to create PivotTables, PivotCharts and other data summary tools. Anyway, it was a great day and I'm looking forward to returning next week to conduct an Advanced Excel training course. |

The art of trainingI've seen many things the good the bad and the darn right ugly. Not that perfection in training is anything I've achieved but sometimes a bit of empathy and common sense can make the person you're training feel at ease and aid training. Archives
